Experiential Learning
Cultivating Resilience & Global Awareness
Experiential Learning is a signature program at Branksome Hall Asia, fostering authentic learning outside the classroom. Our students engage in activities that challenge them to make an impact on the global stage while developing their personal strengths and understanding of their place in the world. Each grade level in the Middle and Senior Schools participates in experiences that are both developmentally-challenging and relationship-enriching. These collaborative expeditions allow students to build lasting connections with their peers while encountering challenges that stretch their resilience and problem-solving skills.
Unique opportunities make Branksome Hall Asia a nurturing ground for future leaders and innovators.
Four Core Philosophies of Experiential Learning
Challenge by Choice
Students encounter and overcome challenges based on their personal growth goals, building their understanding of personal agency and overcoming adversity.
Service Learning
Students make a real impact on local, regional, and global issues through interaction and work with partner organizations.
Outdoor Education
Students build outdoor leadership skills and become accustomed to the natural world, fostering a lifelong appreciation for individual resilience.
Personal Growth
Students develop self-understanding and the ability to grow over time, inspired to lead and be led through experiences that challenge their preconceived notions of what is possible.
Branksome Hall Exchange - BHX
Grade 9 students participate in a signature program that links students at BHA on Jeju with their peers at Branksome Hall in Toronto, Ontario. The BHX program aims to develop international-mindedness, cross-cultural collaboration, personal identity, and leadership skills. Each October, Grade 9 students travel to Toronto for three weeks of outdoor experiences, cultural exchange, and intensive collaboration with their Canadian peers.
A highlight is experiencing the true Canadian wilderness and participating in challenging outdoor activities in Algonquin Provincial Park. Students also visit university campuses and meet with alumni to learn about their university experiences. In the spring, students from our sister school in Toronto visit Jeju for their own immersive cultural experience, further deepening their understanding of their place in the world and their international academic futures.
Malaysia Camp
Grade 8 students travel to Malaysia for their first international camp experience, themed “Going Beyond.” Students are challenged to “get comfortable with the uncomfortable” in a rustic jungle camp, learning and living outdoors in a physically challenging and ecologically different environment from Jeju. They learn wilderness and water survival skills, a highlight being a whitewater rafting experience with experienced guides and safety professionals.
The camp includes low ropes, high ropes, and rock climbing sessions. It features visits from a local indigenous group who guide students through traditional dancing and cultural craft-making activities. This camp marks many students' first international trip, fostering resilience, time management, and personal responsibility.
