Design Technology

At Branksome Hall Asia, we empower students to become skilled designers who identify problems, conceive innovative solutions, and bring their ideas to life. Our design program goes beyond traditional subjects - We connect science, engineering, math, business, arts, and humanities, to develop the skills thinking that prepares students for the future.

A Holistic Approach to Design

Branksome Hall Asia embraces design as an integral part of the curriculum, weaving it seamlessly into the fabric of learning from the earliest years to the demanding Diploma Programme. This holistic approach ensures a deep and enduring understanding of design principles, empowering students to become not just consumers but active creators and innovators who prioritize the needs and perspectives of others.

Empathy is the Foundation

At the heart of our design philosophy lies the cultivation of empathy. We believe that truly successful design emerges from a deep understanding of the human experience. Students learn to put themselves in the shoes of their users, understanding their challenges, motivations, and aspirations. This empathetic approach fosters a deep sense of responsibility and ensures that design solutions are not only functional but also meaningful and impactful. The PYP, MYP and DP Design Cycles have empathy at their core.

STEM is our integration

Students experience firsthand how STEM disciplines converge in the design process. They leverage scientific principles to understand user needs and the impact of their designs on the environment. They harness the power of technology to gather data, analyze information, and bring their ideas to life through digital tools and advanced technologies like 3D printing and robotics. Engineering principles guide them in prototyping, testing, and refining their designs, ensuring functionality and durability. Mathematical concepts inform their understanding of form, function, and efficiency, optimizing their solutions for maximum impact. Through this integrated approach, students develop a deep understanding of how STEM disciplines work together to transform creative ideas into tangible, user-centered solutions.

Design in Junior School

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

In the Junior School, PYP design is seamlessly woven into the fabric of learning through engaging units of inquiry...

Design in the Middle School

Building on Strengths

Building on the strong foundation laid in the Junior School, design takes center stage in the Middle School curriculum for all students from Grades 6 to 8.

Design in the Senior School

A Launchpad for Innovation

In Grade 10, the learning journey takes a personalized turn. Students embark on a specialized path, choosing from a diverse range of captivating courses: Product Design, Computer Science, Entrepreneurship and Design, Robotics Design and Engineering, and Digital Media Design. These immersive courses provide authentic, real-world experiences, challenging students to apply their knowledge and develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

Junior School (JK-5)

  • All students in Junior School have design class and design integrations.

Middle School (6-8)

  • All middle school students take full-year design classes.

Senior School (9-12)

  • All grade 9 students take design as a full-year course.

  • Design is an elective for Grade 10. About 90% of students take one design courses. About 50% of students take two design courses.

  • Students can choose from DP Design Technology and DP Computer Science.
