Taking AP Tests: Is It Necessary?

The IB program is designed to provide a well-rounded education that encompasses all areas of study, including arts, humanities, science, and mathematics. The curriculum is comprehensive, and the assessments are designed to test a student's understanding and ability to apply their knowledge. The Diploma Program provides an excellent foundation for university study since it is well understood and respected by the best academic institutions around the world (check out this interview with an admissions officer from Stanford University about the value of the IB diploma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS4BUi3Exog). Given the IB program’s rigor and strong reputation, it is not necessary for students to take AP tests in addition to the IB exams.
The IB program is thorough; studying for AP tests will only increase the workload for Branksome Hall Asia students. This can negatively impact a student's well-being, as they are forced to prioritize extra exam preparation over classwork, participating in extracurricular activities, and rest. When students are spread too thin, it becomes difficult for them to give their full attention and energy to any one task. They may become overwhelmed and stressed. As a result, students may receive lower scores on tests and assessments, as well as see a decrease in overall performance in school. Good grades in the IB program are significantly more valuable than any extra AP exam score.
We recommend that Branksome Hall Asia students prioritize their well-being and class grades rather than adding the stress and pressure of AP exams. Students are encouraged to speak to their university counselors early and often about preparing competitive applications for universities.
As always, please reach out to your university counselor if you have any questions!
