Returning to Boarding with a Successful Finish to the School Year

By Mindi Dryer, Head of Boarding

Everyone around the world has been faced with the impact of the global pandemic and, amidst it all, Branksome Hall Asia’s solidarity has been truly amazing. There has been a lot of uncertainty this year and we never expected to be away from our boarding students for so long. During the campus closure, the Teacher Dons and the Heads of Houses missed the students dearly and looked forward to the day of their return. Despite the distance, the Teacher Dons were able to keep in touch with the students through online check-ins, and Kakao and Google Meets to ensure that our young learners were adapting to online classes and living in a different environment.  These check-ins were also scheduled to ensure the emotional well being of our students. This communication helped to strengthen the bond between the Boarding Faculty and the students. It was enjoyable to share their home life with their Boarding Family.

Upon their return to Boarding, the transition was smooth and we welcomed them with a pajama party for Grade 10 and a donut and hot chocolate party for Grade 11. The students were also able to bid their farewells to the Grade 12 students and the moment was cherished by all. As the final exams approached for all grades, the Boarding Faculty supported the students in every way possible, through tutoring, completing assignments, and emotional support. We know that there were difficult times, but our young women persevered.

The Grade Level Coordinators came to each Boarding House to support the transition of our students returning as face-to-face classes resumed and students tried their best to adjust to the new safety protocols. It wasn’t easy at times, but the students were eager to see their friends and get back to what is now the new normal. We are looking forward to our end of year dinners and celebrations to close out the year in addition to packing up our rooms and looking forward to our summer plans.

We know that the students will be busy throughout summer, however, we also hope they find time to rest and do the things they enjoy. This will help them rejuvenate and help them recharge to begin a new semester. We look forward to seeing everyone in August again!
