Grade 12 CAS Celebration

Grade 12 CAS Celebration

Dr. Paula Swartz,
MYP Coordinator

On Monday, September 19th, Grade 12 students participated in the CAS Celebration. Creativity, Activity, and Service experiences (CAS) are required by the International Baccalaureate for students to achieve the IB Diploma.

CAS is part of the CORE of the IB Diploma Program. As you can see from the Diploma Programme model, the CORE consists of TOK, EE, and CAS.

The three elements of the Diploma Programme core were introduced by the original curriculum designers of the Diploma Programme as a way to educate the whole person. The core consists of three separate elements, but links and relationships are evident between them.

CAS involves students in a range of enjoyable and significant experiences, as well as a CAS project, which:

• support the interconnectedness of learning

• support concurrency of learning

• support the IB continuum of education and the learner profile

• support a broader view of the subject disciplines.

The IB DP CORE is grounded in three coherent aims:

• support, and be supported by, the academic disciplines

• foster international-mindedness

• develop self-awareness and a sense of identity.

Below is an example of a CAS Project completed by Grade 12 student, Haeun Kim.

‘This service activity is a cooperative event with a service organization called “Global Inner Peace.” Within this event, students will be able to work with the organization to assist them in providing aid to Bhutan - a country in South Asia - to remind ourselves of what true service is and that we can do it and help each other. The projects will include creating videos to teach girls in Bhutan about reusable sanitary pads and creating posters and pamphlets, which will be able to improve our creativity. These projects will be reaching out to the global community, which could be considered a challenge as it requires communication with people from various regions of the world.’

Through this project, Haeun is demonstrating engagement with issues of global significance. She has recognized the benefits of working collaboratively and considered the ethics of her choices and actions.

Beyond success in academics, CAS allows students to maintain balance in their lives, keep active, and supports students self-management in learning and in life.
