Collaboration with GirlsSTEM

This past summer, Branksome Hall Asia engaged in its first collaboration with GirlsSTEM and the TIDE Institute. The Branksome Hall Asia Design department hosted the opening ceremony of the 2020 GirlsSTEM challenge.

GirlsSTEM is an NGO that provides opportunities for girls to engage in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This year’s challenge focused on solutions to improve life within the current COVID-19 context. This objective is very similar to the culminating challenge that was featured in last year’s grade 10 student project.

Students from around Korea gathered at Branksome Hall Asia for the opening of the challenge. Working the GIrlsSTEM team, and supported by Branksome Hall Asia Design teachers Aidan Hammond, Kseniya Maksimava, and John Palmasano, the teams engaged in the challenge and started to plan their solution. The final two days were held at the Jeju FabLab in Jeju city.

One of our Grade 11 students, YuJeong Seo, took on the challenge of being a mentor. Working alongside some younger students, she guided and supported them to develop their COVID-19 solution. Our Branksome Hall Asia team of Runqing Jin, Xuanyu(Julianna) Liu and Shihan Sun, mentored by YuJeong received the Best Design award for their innovative work.

We’re proud of our girls' achievements and excited that Branksome Hall Asia could host an event that is focused on STEM education for girls.
