BHA’s Model United Nations Club

Branksome Hall Asia’s Model United Nations Club started the year off with a bang and a large victory through participation in the online No Borders MUN conference.

Covid-19 has impacted many international conferences in the last couple of years, making it harder to meet students from other countries. The NBMUN conference included 15 schools and over 150 students representing 8 countries. This year, we had 8 students participate as delegates and 6 walked away with awards. As a school, we earned the Verbal Mention delegation award, a large honor.

Students participated in various committees and discussed topics that included: how to establish peace and resolution in the Indo-China conflict; the economic challenges presented by Covid-19 to the global market, especially in countries with unstable social structures and policies; and how to tackle the problem of human trafficking with particular reference to refugees and areas of conflict.

Students also had the opportunity to partake in fictional committees like the Panem Reconstruction Committee, based on the Hunger Games series, the Ministry of Magic based on Harry Potter, or the prevention of World War 3, a historical twist based on global events in the 1950s.

In all committees, students research and approach their topic from a certain perspective. Once in committee, they negotiate their understanding with others in order to create possible resolutions to these real and fictional issues. Students are required to articulate their ideas clearly and respond to others, showing their understanding of diverse opinions and viewpoints.

With the closure of this first conference, the Branksome Hall Asia MUN club is looking forward to other conference opportunities this year.
