2022-23 Reading is Alive and Well at Branksome Hall Asia

Branksome Hall Asia Library Team

The recent Book and Poetry month showed how our Branksome Hall Asia community loves reading and poetry.

This school year has seen a range of visiting authors supporting reading and writing both virtually and in person. Michael Salinger and Sara Holbrook returned virtually to focus on poetry writing in Junior school. Award-winning author Susan Verde shared her story “The Water Princess” with students from Grade 3 to inspire them to take action, and Yangsook Choi worked with Grade 5 students to write their own picture books whilst Ruta Sepetys supported Grade 9 students with writing Historical fiction. Korean illustrator Hyun Joo Jeon, and poet, Hyun Sik Moon worked in person with Junior School students, and the author Miranda Paul will visit in person this month to support writing in the Junior school. We have plans to bring more authors in person next year to promote reading and writing across the school.

To avoid any summer slides, our summer reading programs have just been launched. These benefit students by helping them to maintain their language abilities, especially in English. There are separate programs for JS students from Grades 1-5, and for MS/SS students. Our focus this year is on choice.  Students can choose how they want to share their summer reading from a range of activities. Click on the links above for more information.

Students can read books from SORA, our ebook platform, which provides a wide range of ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. We will also be hosting a Book Fair from Tuesday, 13th to Thursday, 15th of June, in the 2nd-floor school center so that students and parents can purchase new books for the summer.
